lyrics

Last night at the table I found myself amazed
So many different countries were visiting my plate
Lamb from New Zealand, red peppers from Peru
Asparagus from Mexico and Chinese garlic, too

I thought of Laura Ingalls that pioneering girl
Wondered what she’d think of our carbon crazy world
I think that Laura Ingalls would shake her head and frown
To see the waste that we create moving food around

We can’t grow bananas in the cold
And let’s hope that the Family Farm’s never sold
‘Cause the apples are crisp and sweet. And the cheddar can’t be beat
There’s good eating from just down the road

This morning when I woke up I thought about the Farm
And all the ways that I could try to do less harm
I went driving in the country stopped at a roadside stand
Down at the market I shook a farmer’s hand

I started me a garden just three feet wide
And planted some tomatoes, green beans and chives
I ‘m gonna read a book about how to make my own jam
Preserving fruits and vegetables means I won’t need to buy ’em in a can

We can’t grow mangos in the cold.
And let’s hope that the Family Farm’s never sold
‘Cause the carrots are crisp and sweet. And the maple syrup can’t be beat
There’s good eating from just down the road

So ask your produce manager what’s local and what’s ripe
Remember what’s spewing from that truck’s tailpipe
We’ve gotta check the labels. Put our habits to the test
‘Cause when we eat in season you know the food tastes its best

You shouldn’t need a passport when you’re at the grocery store
If you stay within a 100 miles you’d be a locavore
The pioneers could do it so why can’t we?
It’s time that we think local and act responsibly

We can’t grow avocadoes in the cold
And let’s hope that the Family Farm’s never sold
‘Cause the turnips are crisp and sweet. And the wild blueberries can’t be beat
There’s good eating from just down the road

So come on! Let’s get started! Check your plate
Add up your food miles the planet can’t wait
When you buy local it lessens the load
There’s good eating from just down the road
